Minas Halaj’s work has been acquired by museums worldwide, including the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia; the Mākslas Museum in Latvia; and the Bakersfield Museum of Art in California.
Born in Armenia, Halaj graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Yerevan in 2002 before relocating to the United States that same year. In 2004, he continued his studies at the Art Institute of San Francisco, and he now lives and works in Los Angeles.
Halaj’s practice fuses elements of classical art with contemporary influences, creating a visual symphony of graphics, collage, and figurative composition. He frequently incorporates recycled materials and vintage textiles into his canvases, adding layers of texture, depth, and complexity to his work.
His intricate and meticulously detailed paintings have been exhibited in nearly 50 contemporary art shows around the world and have entered prestigious collections such as Morgan Stanley Headquarters in New York, Sony Music Headquarters in Beverly Hills, the PepsiCo Company Collection in Dubai, and the collection of Princess Anita of Hohenberg in Vienna, Austria.
One of Halaj’s most celebrated series, Floral Minds, is both vibrant and reminiscent of the Old Masters. Speaking about this body of work, the artist reflects:
“The concept of beauty is a burdened one. We are living in a society that fears its adoration in contemporary art, yet intimidates its women into accepting it as their highest value. We have degraded it in mass media and celebrity, yet revere it above all other qualities of life. Beauty is a double-edged sword, an instrument of seduction and an overwhelming distrust in the simple sensation of pleasure.”
