Lis Sam is a self-taught artist, born in Tunisia in 1989 and raised in France from the age of eleven. Initially trained in craftsmanship, he developed an early sensitivity to form, material, and composition. As with many artists, his path shifted following a decisive encounter with a work of art during his travels, an experience that led him to fully embrace a creative path.
After several years exploring diverse projects and mediums, a second defining moment occurred during a visit to a butterfly greenhouse in the south of France. This intimate experience inspired the conception of his signature series, Les Jeunes Filles en Fleurs (The Blossoming Girls), which has come to define his artistic identity.
Lis Sam’s practice is distinguished by a meticulous and imaginative process. Each work originates from carefully staged compositions, where floral arrangements are conceived as the structural foundation of the image. In his studio, he designs and crafts intricate headdresses, integrating them seamlessly into the photographic composition.
Through the incorporation of preserved butterflies, the artist creates a dialogue between memory, nature, and transformation. These delicate elements merge with the floral forms, revealing a subtle balance between organic presence and poetic expression. Each piece becomes a celebration of biodiversity and ephemeral beauty.
Engaging with the principles of optical art, Lis Sam’s works evolve with the viewer’s perspective. The interplay of texture, light, and fragmentation invites a constantly shifting perception, making each encounter with the artwork singular and immersive.
